D&D, OSR and AD&D monsters in Torg Eternity (Conversions)

 To use the Monster Manuals or other sources for creatures I just apply the following rules of thumb:

Wounds: Hit Dice (HD) divided by 2 and rounded up.

Toughness: Armor Class (minimum 5) + Hit Dice (HD)

Shock: based on Torg Strength stat (see below)

Stats: if given can be used one to one (creatures deserve the boos in power in Torg, because the players have that may cards and Possibilities), otherwise 7 + Hit Dice (HD) as baseline. Obviously you will need to make changes here, if something makes no sense (e.g. Charisma for a Ooze)

I am using OSR resources for my Aysle game, therefore I am working from a very limited base.

TORG: A New Cosm? A Utopia of Manners!

I was asked what cosm I would create - and where - if the Gaunt Man gave me a darkness device and asked me to invade Earth. Here is my reply:

Germany and especially Austria (that's where I am from) and the Balkans need a cosm!

Genrewise I miss Fantasy of Manners and Transhuman Sciencefiction, leading to some Post/Transhumanism of Manners?

There will be New Romanticism like it's 1982, except that it feels more like 2082. Some powdered wigs, but at least as much long glam rock hair. It's the weird psychedlic and timeless future of 70ies Scifi like Zardoz beyond the wastelands. H.G. Wells' Eloi running the cosm, being nasty to each other behind the gobelins. Melniboné fits in there as well.

It has the tree shooting party scene vibe from the 1970ies Rollerball, the roaming the countryside roads of Clockwork Orange's Durango 95 rides and the killer gemstone and weird costumes from Logan's Run. An utopia with dark undercurrents.

Lovecraft as bad writer?

When I read Lovecraft as a teenager I was looking for suspense and thrills. I did not find it. Instead I found the strange choice of wide distance from the supposed action. Decades later I started rereading Lovecraft exactly for that distance.

It’s a choice to see everything through a filter of disbelief in reality (now). A state of shock that fades out sound and puts the world seemingly in slow motion. The distance he creates also reminds me of what I imagine clinical depression to be like. Lovecraft’s Cosmic Horror is mostly existential and I can’t stop reading him for the out of body experience he provides.

Cthulhu is a stupid looking monster, but it also turned into an universal icon of the wish that everything would come to an end - jokingly of course, because nonfundamentalists don’t believe in Judgement Days, but sometimes wish for it anyways. Cthulhu turned into that fix in geek culture. Dark Gnosis: look it up.

Email RPGs around 2000: White Deer

For quite some time in the late 1990ies and early Noughties most of my role playing games were run in the form of IRC and especially email games.

Sadly some of those are lost, while a few are saved on yahoogroups.

One example for this was the short lived Radiant RPG. You can find an overview over posts in the message archive.

I remembered this game now, because the character I play in my current Necessary Evil game - Crystal Antlers - das Kristallgeweih - originated there. Now people can get the impression that I was inspired by amazing band by the same name, but the idea for the character dates back to the 2nd of October 2000.
